Our Veterinarians and Staff for Cedar Falls, Waterloo & Waverly
Clif Paulsen, DVM
I joined Cedar Valley Veterinary Center in 2003 and became the owner of the clinic in 2012. Previously, I practiced veterinary medicine in Kentucky. I received my BS and Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University in 2002.
I enjoy many different facets of veterinary medicine, but especially ophthalmology, internal medicine, and reproduction.
I am a Cedar Falls native, where I was privileged to be involved in many aspects of livestock, agriculture, and 4H. This is still a huge part of my life at home. My wife, Debbie, and 3 children, Sutton, Fisher, and Howard, all participate in raising sheep and American Saddlebred horses. I also serve as head coach of the Cedar Falls High School men's swim team.
Kevin Christman, DVM

I enjoy many aspects of veterinary medicine, but have a particular interest in orthopedic and soft tissue surgery.
I currently live with 2 cats, Bebop and Rocksteady, a high energy Pitbull named Stevie Donuts and my less hairy children and wife. In my spare time, I enjoy reliving my glory days playing ice hockey, reading science fiction, and playing video games.
Debra Simonsen, DVM
I joined Cedar Valley Veterinary Center in 2014 after spending several years practicing small animal medicine in Minnesota, Iowa, and Illinois. I am a proud graduate of Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine.
After relocating to Cedar Falls in 2009, I spent my first years taking the opportunity to do relief work in the Cedar Valley area. This allowed me to experience several clinics and to find the right fit. The location and part time status made CVVC a wonderful fit for my family and me. It allowed me the flexibility to be able to enjoy the school year activities of my 3 daughters. Now that my girls have grown, it continues to give me the freedom to be able to visit my girls and to enjoy watching them fly.
I continue to enjoy veterinary medicine and love how much it has evolved in the last 30 years. There are so many more options for treatment and care, which allows us to keep our pets healthy members of our families.
Amber Jacobsen, DVM
I was first introduced to the wonderful staff of CVVC as a kennel attendant, while attending the University of Northern Iowa for my undergraduate degree. After earning my DVM from Iowa State College of Veterinary Medicine in 2018, I returned to Cedar Falls with my husband to begin my career as a veterinarian. I enjoy many aspects of veterinary medicine, but have developed a fondness for ultrasound and surgery. I have enjoyed seeing a range of species while working here, and have appreciated being able to help clients with back yard pets, including; chickens, ducks, rabbits, and goats. I also enjoy working with exotic species, ranging from small reptiles to small mammals.
In my free time, I enjoy many outdoor activities with my husband, Codie, our daughters, Reagan and Oakley, and our English Setter, Harper. We enjoy fishing, hunting and archery, and gardening in the summer time.
Caleb Vander Wiel, DVM
I am a Cedar Falls native that worked at CVVC when I was in high school and while going to college at UNI. I received my Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University in 2020. After this, I completed an internship working with shelter animals at Iowa State University before coming back to the Cedar Valley.
I like many aspects of veterinary medicine, but I am especially interested in working through challenging and complicated cases. I enjoy utilizing various forms of diagnostics, like ultrasound, to help work through and identify patient’s problems. These cases give me the opportunity to learn and grow, which I have always found rewarding. Most of all I like that veterinary medicine gives me an avenue to help people and their pets live better lives together.
While not at CVVC I enjoy spending time with my wife, family, friends, and pets. I have many activities that I am enthusiastic about from collecting whiskey to playing games like Magic the Gathering. Along with these things I love to spend as much time as possible outdoors doing things like cycling, hiking, and golfing.

Office Pets
Louise
I joined the CVVC family just before the big move over to this building. In fact, I did most of the supervising for the move! I'm just over 6 now, and I love my job at CVVC, I supervise all the cleaning of the cat condos, as well as making sure all the food in the building is fresh and tasty. I am also chief morale officer, and I help teach clients how to give their kitties at-home shots. All in all, I keep this place running!
Thor
I'm a little over 8 years old, so I'm getting a little bit older, but I still have lots of sass! My favorite foods are super worms and butter worms (but the lad who takes care of me is mean and says I'll get fat if I eat too many butter worms). I also like crickets and mealworms, and I get red worms as a treat sometimes. YUMMY!
Leopard geckos are pretty great, if I do say so myself.
Salt, Pepper and Paprika
These three fish are a type of goldfish called Koi. Koi are originally from Japan and are symbols of luck and good fortune.
Our koi didn't come all the way from Japan. We were gifted this aquaponics setup with our koi friends from a teacher at Cedar Falls High School. They were part of an experiment to teach students about combining hydroponics and aquaculture. Instead of moving to the new high school, they came to live with us.
Salt, Pepper, and Paprika love food time, and will come to the top of the tank to beg for food when they see people near them. They love their pellets, but are also interested in some veggies. While most koi enjoy bugs as well, ours are very picky and have turned their noses up at both crickets and roaches.
- Fun Facts about koi:
- The largest koi on record was 4 feet long and 91 pounds!
- Koi are illegal to keep in the state of Maine, but are legal in all other states.
- The oldest recorded koi was 226 years old, most koi can live to be 50 - 100 years old.
- Koi can go up to 2 weeks without food.
- The age of a koi can be estimated by the rings on their scales, like trees.
- Koi have sensitive skin and can get sunburned.
